THE FAMILY OF JOSEPH C. FREDERICK AND MARY BETZ

of Columbiana County, Ohio

Joseph C. Frederick, son of Conrad Frederick and Ann Brown, was born about 1808 in Pennsylvania. According to the 1850 Ohio Federal Census, Joseph was a cooper following in a Frederick family tradition. His grandfather and uncle were both coopers, however, I am unsure whether his father, Conrad Frederick, was also involved in the trade. As teenagers, Joseph’s twin sons, Albert and Alfred, helped with the coopering business. On August 31, 1834 in Columbiana County, Ohio Joseph married Mary Betz, born August 8, 1811 in Columbiana County, Ohio daughter of Christian Betz and Christina Kieffer of Salem Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.

Joseph and Mary lived in or near Franklin Square, Salem Township, Columbiana County, Ohio and raised nine children. Joseph C. Frederick died on Jun 4, 1853 at the age of forty-five and was buried in the Lutheran Cemetery, Washingtonville, Ohio with his parents and grandparents.

Mary Frederick continued to live in Franklin Square with a number of her younger children. Later in life, she was a member of her daughter, Julietta Frederick Sheets’, household in Centre Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. Mary died at the age of eighty-seven on September 24, 1898 in Columbiana County, Ohio. She is buried in the Township Cemetery, Franklin Square, Salem Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. The tombstone is inside an enclosed area and there looks to be someone buried beside Mary in an unmarked grave. Also buried in the area is T.A. Martin. I have no idea if this person is related to the Frederick family. A number of the Frederick children died during their childhood and could possibly be buried with Mary.

Children of Joseph C. Frederick and Mary Betz:

1. Melvinia Frederick born about 1834 in Columbiana County, Ohio and died before 1896.
2. ALFRED FREDERICK born May 1, 1836 in Columbiana County, Ohio died February 9, 1927 married LUCINDA B. ORR.
3. Albert Frederick born May 1, 1836 in Columbiana County, Ohio, died in 1853.
4. Julietta Frederick born May 1839 married Henry Sheets on December 18, 1856 in Columbiana County, Ohio. They had three children: Charles Edward Sheets born 1859, Flora Belle Sheets born 1861 married J.W. Randels, and Ida M. Sheets born July 1864.
5. Isabel Frederick born about 1841 in Columbiana County, Ohio married Jesse Warrington and had daughters; Florence Warrington and Gertrude Warrington who married Carl Bain.
6. Isiah Frederick born about 1843 in Columbiana County, Ohio and died before 1896.
7. William Jackson Frederick born August 22, 1845 in Franklin Square, Columbiana County, Ohio and died October 4, 1910 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. William married Emma Hipkins on November 10, 1872 and had:
   • Agnes Emma Frederick born September 25, 1873, married Francis Shoup, and died in 1928.
   • Queen Elizabeth Frederick born on May 31, 1877 in Garrett, Indiana, married Charles Henry Abell on October 26, 1901, and died January 15, 1978 in Marion, Indiana. Queen and Charles had two sons; Charles Frederick Abell, born November 8, 1909, died October 15, 1979, married Pauline Torrance on August 3, 1928 and William Frederick Abell, born December 5, 1914 and died as an infant.
   • Mary Edith Frederick born on August 17, 1875, married Homer H. Allen, died in Erie, Pennsylvania.
   • Jessie Belle Frederick born December 8, 1879 and died on July 23, 1880.
   • Frances Cleveland Frederick born November 28, 1887
   William married second, Mary Mace Paxton on November 17, 1897 and had:
   • Ruth Frederick
   • William Frederick
   • Russell Frederick
8. Mary Ann Frederick born about 1848 in Columbiana County, Ohio died about 1864.
9. Joseph C. Frederick, Jr. born April 14, 1853 in Franklin Square, Columbiana County, Ohio died on December 31, 1927 in St. Petersburg, Florida married cousin, Barbara LaRue Bossert in Columbiana County, Ohio. They had two daughters: Mary Frederick married Al Cobourn and Anna McDonald Frederick born 1884 married Chester M. Stamp.
