Margaret C. Orr, daughter of William Morlan Orr and Nancy Cannon, was born in 1842 in Columbiana County, Ohio. As a young woman of twenty-eight, she was employed as a domestic at the County Infirmary in Centre Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. There she met her future husband, John F. Groomes, born in 1836, son of James Groomes and Nancy Frederick of Centre Township, Columbiana County, Ohio, who was employed as a farmer for the Infirmary. Maggie and John married in Columbiana County on November 10, 1870.
John Groomes served for three years during the civil war with the 3rd Independent Battery, Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery. He mustered in on January 13, 1862 at age twenty-three and mustered out with an honorable discharge at Nashville, Tennessee on February 24, 1865. During his time in service he participated in Pittsburg Landing, Corinth, Mississippi, Champion Hill and was in the forty-seven days seige of Vicksburg and also Atlanta.
From 1876 until 1882 John was elected to the position of superintendant of the Columbiana County Infirmary. Noted in the New Lisbon Journal on Monday, October 30, 1876, “John Grooms, Superintendent of the County Infirmary, was stabbed there by an inmate named Headly. About two years since, Headly’s wife, died at Wellsville leaving two children and the father concluding that he would be unable to support himself and children went to the Infirmary. He cares for the heating engine. One of the children has since been sent out to work, another is at school. In an argument with Grooms, he stabbed him....not fatally, but charges will be brought.”
Both Maggie and John were members of the Lutheran church and John served as a deacon for four years. Following his service as superintendent, John purchased 133 acres of farm land in Centre Township.
The Groomes had five children before Maggie's death in 1886. John died in 1905. Both are buried at Mt. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Centre Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. The cemetery is on a hill overlooking the County Infirmary.
